Great hardware, terrible software

Sony’s great little projector is practically ruined by the terrible user experience from badly written software. There is no separate hardware remote so you are forced to use the app for even the most basic operation such as changing the volume. Painful.

The latest version claims to allow the projector to remember and start up from the last used input. Unfortunately, while the option is shown in the app’s settings, choosing it does absolutely nothing. It is basically an outright lie! The unit will always only start up in poster mode no matter what you do. The posters are cute for about a minute after you see them for the very first time and then it is absolutely maddening because you realize just how pointless they really are.

Connect the projector to any other device and the product has a chance to shine. Like a couple of other reviewers, I use it with an Apple TV which, to paraphrase a genius, provides an experience like, “giving a glass of ice water” in Sony UI hell.

Sadly, I cannot recommend the projector at all because the experience is ruined by forcing the user to jump through hoops every time one wants to watch something. Until this bug is fixed, my unit remains off most of the time. I really wish they would fix it.

App is slow, lacks core functions

I love the hardware, but the software of this app is slow. I also agree with another reviewer that setting the default to HDMI is a must have requirement in the next release. I never use the poster function, since I connected the projector with an Apple TV, which has a more robust visual library.

The app also doesn't function well on multiple devices. I had it installed on my iPhone and iPad, but the projector kept hanging up, so I deleted the app from my iPhone. Both devices are the latest models.

Zero support

This product felt like a really innovative one that was all but abandoned by Sony. No updates for years, dropping applications that once worked with the device and, frustratingly, only about a 25% chance of detecting HDMI due to who knows what (and troubleshooting tips that don’t go beyond “is HDMI plugged in?” I share views of others — faith in Sony lost.
