Description

This point of care tool is designed to assist healthcare professionals in managing the opioid needs of chronic non-cancerous pain (CNCP) patients. Drawing from the newly released recommendations of the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain- United States (2016), it is designed to provide information on how to safely conduct and appropriately monitor an opioid drug trial in CNCP patients. The use of colour coding, pop up reminders and other supplementary information helps guide the clinician in the safe use of opioids in pain management. The app includes an easy to use morphine equivalence calculator and an opioid to opioid calculator. Conversions of opioid medications can be accomplished using either generic or trade names. A user adjustable, cross tolerance slider scale automatically decreases the recommended opioid dose when converting to a new opioid medication. Trade name drug formulation information, including descriptions and active ingredients, provides useful information to the clinician and makes for easier conversions. The choice of either an American or Canadian settings option automatically changes the approved drug lists, conversion factors, and clinical management recommendations appropriate for each jurisdiction. Quick links to the relevant national guidance are included should they be needed.
