Description

The Pixel Art Effect app lets you turn your photo into video game pixel art. The effect ranges from modern pixel art which has a more subtle pixelated effect (many small pixels) to retro pixel art which is made up of fewer larger pixels.

You can control the amount of pixels you want.
There 6 designs to choose from which differ in color etc.
You can control the edge thickness. This is the outline of the artwork.
There are also 4 pixel designs to choose from. These pixel designs are standard square, hexagon pixels, triangular pixels and torn pixels. See the screenshot for a visual example.

No internet connection is required!

Step 1:

To convert your image to pixel art! Simply tap the "Add a Photo". You will be presented with the option of choosing a photo from your photo library or taking a picture with your camera!

Step 2:

Tap the "Apply Pixel Effect" button.

Step 3:

Save your pixel art to your photo library or share it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, VK or any other social network, forum or site and set the picture as a profile picture, cover photo etc.

As of version 2.2, Pixel Art Effect allows you to do a lot more with your photos! The effects are endless because you can mix and combine the features and effects.

You can also add text to your photos before or after applying the pixel effect! Add the text before applying the pixel effect if you want the text to become pixelated as well!

You can also crop your photos into various shapes. Choose from a circle, flag, heart, star, square or rectangle.

What’s New

Version 2.3

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Added darker color effects in the converter due to a review which we've received about the colors being too washed out. We have, however, kept the other color effects for those who like those.
Minor navigational changes were also made.

Colorization Fixed

App makes pics look beautiful. Current build of the app is perfect. This app and imaengine are must have photo editing apps if you want to either make your photos look like either a awesomely retro videogame or an amazingly drawn/painted work of art.

(PS, thanks again for getting this to work on tablets too!)

Developer Response ,

Thank you for all the kind words. We've read the reviews about the app not working well on iPads and we could have fixed it sooner but also wanted to eliminate the internet connection requirement which one reviewer mentioned. Some mentioned that the app would be more useful if you could change the size of the pixels. So while we were at it, we decided it was time to rebuild the app from scratch. We basically added much more than what was asked of us. It took a few months and it's why we didn't want to provide an ETA. Luckily there weren't many drawbacks other than the color issue but that was fixed promptly because we had an algorithm which was put on the back-burner. Since releasing this version, we've actually perfected the algorithm quite a bit but wanted to release this update as soon as possible. We may release those updates soon as extra styles to choose from.

Awesome, but one little tiny thing

i love this, i got it to make designs in Animal Crossing. It worked perfectly, but the only thing is there’s a minimum/maximum of how many pixels you can put in one pic, and for me it didn’t line up. i just made the picture bigger (making the desired picture smaller), and i got it to the exact number of pixels i wanted. another thing, it would be great if you could choose the number of pixels on both length and width of the picture, it would make it so much easier. it worked great, and my 32/32 pixel picture on Animal Crossing looked LIFELIKE!!!!

Great app but found a glitch

This app was exactly what I needed. It made the pixels perfect for what I was making. However, when putting in one of my photos, the contrast went super high and the picture was bright, making some things appear white and super bright. When I downloaded it, the picture still looked the same. I hope this gets fixed in the future. Other than that, thank you for making this amazing app.
