Amazing

Fantastic book. I've read every single choice of games book on the App Store, (except for that one about being an iron atom. I mean, what?) and this is most definitely the best one I've had the pleasure of "playing" coming in atop my former favorites, tin star and the heroes rise trilogy. This book delivered. I felt for the characters. I wanted to be there to comfort hatch, or lay a friendly hand on the ronin's shoulder when he was feeling overwhelmed. I enjoyed the dichotomy between the first book, which focused more on violence and swordplay, and this one, more attuned to the intellectual pursuits available in hyuga. Also, the last supper, Mona Lisa, and roof of the cistine chapel inclusions were much appreciated. I truly cannot wait until the third installment.

Hear me out. Kind of different from book 1

I’ve never cared to write a review before but... the tone and writing is as good as the first. However it feels as if we are restricted to the choices we’ve made based on our stats. Now each choice isn’t clear in which your atunement is raised or lowered. It kind of bugged me as I wanted to diversify my character from book one, it was a bit frustrating having want to open up to my motley crew but feeling as if i wasnt supposed to. As character development is something every story should have.

Now i dont really agree with other criticisms when we move onto the island. I feel like it’s a welcome addition, there are supposed to be supernatural elements that tug and mislead your path as the oni of greed tried to do in the first.

I think if you really liked the first book definitely consider reading this one. I was only annoyed with the atunement stats, and that I had to take to google for a particular segment (one involving a japanese board game). This book is all about the aftermath after a storm with an exciting beginning and another storm brewing towards the end. Im hoping book 3 holds up considering the positive reviews.

Definite props to the author.

Lacking

I agree with the whole confusion about the last half of the story. It started off amazing because it stuck with feudal Japan as its setting but then the last half is in some weird stranded island, and now apparently the characters can't get out of it too. Just where was this supposed to go? The mission was to find the 2nd demon and kill it, not stay in a fantasy island for half of the book.

It's like the saying, "If we gonna eat, let's eat." Let's kill that demon already because we all know who it is.

Another thing I didn't like was how little romance there was, despite there being options for who you could pick in some scenes. I expected a little more romance in the second book but no. If the gender of Toshio/Toshi determined whether or not my character is gay/lesbian or straight, I would want more interactions with that character and not a forced (depending how you play) "romance" scene with Momo (the only female in the gang). There were many chances and moments where it could've taken a somewhat romantic turn with the other characters, but it didn't deliver. And don't get me started with that crazy bastard Jin. He's a big NO.

I was promised romance. At least make all of the characters an option, not just one.
