Description

*** This is the best set of bird songs and calls for North America ever published. Lang Elliott's set of American bird songs is simply amazing ***

*** Another American Bird App? Remember the app 'Birdtunes', an app to quickly browse songs and calls of North American birds which is no longer available? This is its replacement with updated taxonomy, over 3,100 songs including all the songs from Lang Elliott + 400 more! However, this app is NOT a field guide but a great companion if you already know your birds and simply need a source to QUICKLY find and play top quality songs in the field! ***

The sounds are of superb quality covering 900 bird species and 3,100 songs and calls including spectrograms for each sound. Photographs and a selection of states and provinces are also included. *** This is the best set of songs and calls for this region ever published.***

All species can be browsed according to their taxonomic classification and thus easily be compared. Spectrograms to all sounds as well as high quality photographs and descriptions to each species are also included. Explanations to all recordings are given including location and more. Bird names are given in English, Latin and French, Spanish and German.

This app offers many special features:

– 3,100 songs & calls
– includes 900 North American species, USA & Canada
– spectrograms to all sounds
– compare 8 or 16 sounds next to each other or play simultaneously
– 1,380 photographs
– create your own sighting lists and sort by place, date, group, and name

* English, Latin, French, Spanish, German

What’s New

Version 1.8

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Thank you for over 100 supportive emails with lots of suggestions to make the app more usable in the field!

We have solved a few annoying bugs and will continue doing so:

- the app opens much quicker now, this was due to fact that it still had a test routine activated by mistake which slowed the app down tremendously

As a result:

- The app will now open much faster than before
- the app might open on older devices where it crashed before it could open

- app is now iOS 11 ready (this solves some graphical errors)
- App doesn't close anymore when you switch to another app andthen come back
- "subtrack" has been removed from the song description which sometimes overlapped with song captions

Still slow and poor interface

This is probably still the best app for USA bird songs for iPhone. However, there is plenty to things not to like and most are little things. But seriously, why is it so slow? Just slow enough that you feel the need to tap again but it then responds and you end up jumping ahead. Why is there no “recent birds” option? Why are there no favorites? And navigating between species is so tedious. There was Birdtunes which had it right but has now gone. Hint to the authors of this app, take what reviewers liked about Birdtunes. Not that hard to do.
My biggest gripe is the location of the play button, why top right, the hardest place to reach??
I also feel the selection of songs for some species is not that great. I would gladly pay more for a more diverse set of songs.

Clumsy and lacking

I can’t understand what happened to the excellent Birdtunes app - that I had (twice) paid for btw. It just disappeared from the App Store and seems to have been replaced with this. Gone is the ability to save favorites or even to access recent songs. To switch from bird to bird one must type in the name each time. This app is also missing some of the most effective recordings for calling birds in the field, and some songs have been wrongly categorized. The app’s usefulness in the field is seriously downgraded by how long it takes to access a bird. Still, it is the only one I have found that will play songs on loop and has all the species one would want.

Perfect field companion

Thank god the annoying bug has been fixed, the app is now as fast as it should be. This is the app I have been waiting for replacing the app birdtunes! I have frequently used birdtunes in the field, an easy to use guide to quickly find and play different varieties of bird songs and calls without having to struggle to find the songs in hidden submenus. In my opinion this app is even better. I really like the simple way the app is structured, this app will become a constant companion in the field while out birding. 2 suggestions: favourite feature and last played section. Otherwise great!
