Description

Helping you protect what matters most is our top priority. That’s why we are offering you KnowYourDrive, a simple way to get on the road towards safety and savings.

KnowYourDrive helps you learn safer driving habits and gives you more control over how much you pay for car insurance.

After each household driver downloads the app at no cost, you’ll receive an introductory car insurance discount. The app then continues to monitor your driving behavior and show your progress, so you can keep learning and adjust your driving habits accordingly.

The app displays your discount, trip details, safe driving tips and keeps track of your streak of distraction-free trips. Additional detail is provided on your driving versus others who have the app.

And depending on how you drive, your policy will earn a program discount on your car insurance. Nice!

Please note that the KnowYourDrive app is available to invited American Family Insurance customers.

Does only one thing accurately.

If the app recognizes that you are driving (which it does about 55% of the time), and you pick up your phone, it will correctly record you are distracted by your phone and not focusing on your driving. I think that the app is valuable for that aspect alone, but the hope of a 20% discount off the cost of your auto insurance, based on any other safe driving habits, is wishful thinking. The app is woefully inaccurate with regard to braking. It habitually has an inaccurate speed zone, which I have reported, on a regular route that I used to drive but now detour miles around so I don’t have to lie and say I wasn’t at the wheel when I passed through. And worst of all, it simply fails to record almost half, by actual count, of my trips—try to outperform the average driver with half of your numbers missing. I WILL SAY THAT THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE PEOPLE ARE AMONG THE VERY BEST I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. Their problem is that they are forced to deal with a technology that isn’t theirs: the GPS information they use comes from a third-party provider over whom they have no control. I suspect they are as frustrated as I am.

Inaccurate 0 STARS

You have this app rating at 4.5 with 734 ratings. I stopped counting at 101-1 star ratings because every other rating would need to be 5 stars for this app to be rounded up to 4.5. A very quick look let’s you know that there are far more 1 star ratings than there are 5 star and several 2 or 3 star ratings. This app is probably closer to 2.5 out of 5. Don’t be fooled. It’s awful!

Two people in the same vehicle will have different concerns with acceleration and braking. The acceleration requirement for the app is dangerously slow and when you hit the freeway after several seconds the cars behind you do extremely dangerous maneuvers to get around you. I would suggest the 5 mph per second begin at 15 miles per hour to prevent that ridiculously slow start. I have also had an occupant in my vehicle with the cruise control set at the speed limit and my KYD said I had high speed and the passenger did not. There is an accuracy problem. You’ll still get a discount but it won’t be the amount you probably should get. I can’t believe others haven’t shared this side by side comparison challenge in the past. It actually frustrates me as a driver and a customer. I wonder if another company has a more accurate app. It might be worth looking into.

I’ve read a great deal about algorithms in your responses. What do your algorithms say about the next generation being customers when every conversation I’m having with my son starts with “I hate this app!” ?

My discount reduced 50 percent!

When I first started using the app I had a 5% savings. I definitely drive better since using it and I no longer use my phone while driving. So that in itself is wonderful! The bad; it marks me as the driver if I am using my phone while my husband is driving. This means I have to make sure I remember to go in the app and change it - I have forgotten a few times and got dinged by that. I’m much better at it now! My driving stats are better than average for distracted, they’re on the far low end for speeding and hard braking - all good, you’d think. Until I get to the next 6-month term and my discount plummeted for seemingly no good reason; now I’m only getting 2%? That’s more than half reduced. When I called my agent they had no idea why that would happen? They suggested maybe I’m driving more often. Sadly, that’s not the case as I have less than a 4-mile commute and also work from home some of that time. So according to the app my driving is excellent but I’m not being rewarded much for it anymore. At 2% I’m saving $17 over six months. That’s a savings of $2.83 a month. Is that worth it for having the lack of privacy where this app knows everywhere I am going 24/7??? I have to wonder that. Not happy about this.
