Description

Lifemap is a tool to explore the tree of life in an interactive manner, similar to the exploration of geographic maps. The tree displayed is a simplification of the taxonomy provided by the NCBI. The tree contains around 800,000 species. Each node (incl. species) in the tree can be clicked to get information and pictures retrieved from Wikipedia. It is also possible to compute and visualize the "route" between two taxa or clades in the tree.

Sadly, the best

This is the best app out there for phylogenetics I could find. It’s difficult, but not impossible to navigate, and the info seems questionable, though it does at least include a lot of species, including extinct species, which I couldn’t find in another usable app. The search feature does a great job of allowing you to type text into it. The tree doesn’t include homo sapien sapien (us) at all. Though it does include Denisovans and Neanderthals. Probably dozens of other known hominins and early humans are missing, including homo erectus, which should be ancestral to all of the homo sapien subspecies based on what we currently know.

Evolution rocks. broken app though

I like when anyone honestly makes an attempt at the visualization of the evolution of life (which we humans are a part of regardless of whether the devs of this app are too scared to admit it) and I would love to see another app like this take the reigns. One which works in the most basic functions at least. This app is completely broken on iPhone. Navigation broken. Search bar broken. Other search bar broken. Also, missing information on obscure creatures is understandable, but excluding Homo sapiens is downright dishonest at this point. The evidence is not in question. We are animals.

Could be great

It’s a great zoomable phylogeny. It only falters in two ways: the phylogenies/taxonomies are out-of-date or partially missing and the non-zooming navigation is nonfunctional. Two different search bars are available but do not function. Also while zooming is fine, panning—especially vertically—is a challenge.
Homo contains H. heidelbergensis, H. sapiens neanderthalensis , & H. sapiens denisova—THE END—we (H. sapiens sapiens) aren’t actually included.

With updates & fixes, it would be much better, rivaling anything else out there.
