Sailors Love Saildrone Forecast!

Saildrone Forecast is designed for use on both land and water, but with wind-powered water activities at our core, sailors (windsurfers and kite surfers) love the hyper-local wind speed and direction and current forecasts.

“What makes Saildrone Forecast superior to other available sailing weather apps is that it’s updated on a day-to-day basis with fresh high-definition forecasts available each morning,” said Will Paxton, a San Francisco-based pro sailor.

Better Data Means Better Forecasts

Saildrone’s mission is to collect and share more data about the planet. The oceans cover more than 70% of Earth’s surface and drive weather, regulate temperature, and ultimately support life on Earth. Much of the weather we experience on land starts in the oceans, so we believe weather forecasting should start in the oceans, too.

Our global fleet of saildrones continuously sails the world’s oceans collecting atmospheric and oceanographic data. These expeditions generate unmatched, proprietary high-resolution data sets that are used by scientists at the world’s leading science organizations to better understand air-sea interactions and improve long-range weather forecasting and prediction of extreme weather events.

High hopes

I am pulling for this app, seriously! It has great information on very specific locations, the design is particularly beautiful for a weather app, it is easy to use, easy to search/favorite locations, and the features look to be very promising if they mature (I hope you add the surf feature!). I see the potential and this app could really be amazing.

My one critique/skepticism is on temperature accuracy. Upon first use in LA, it seemed to me like the temperatures reported at all locations were too cold. When comparing to other resources, Saildrones was always the coldest by anywhere from 1-10 degrees. I have a hard time believing everyone else is that far off. I spent the day outside with most other apps reporting around 68 degrees while Saildrones reported 64, and 37 years of life experience tells me that 68 was more accurate. Looking out in the forecast, the coldness trend continues for all 7 days compared to other forecasts.

I’ll be using this app, hoping that my skepticism will disappear and that the temperatures will prove to be spot on. Good luck and keep up the good work!

We're on it! Thanks for such detailed feedback. We've shared it this with our forecast modeling team to take a closer look at. Los Angeles is definitely a priority area for us. If you have any other thoughts or feedback to share, please email us at forecastsupport@saildrone.com

Incredibly useful but frustratingly buggy

I use this app every day for swimming around the coastline of San Francisco and in the SF Bay. Super useful for figuring out the back eddies and timing/velocity of tides. Also seems like the most accurate app for weather predictions (could cover, precip, air temps) on an hourly basis at all my frequent swim locations. Biggest issue is that it crashes when switching between favorited locations, and sometimes the tidal current data is broken/won’t show up for days or a week. Sometimes quitting the app and restarting it works, but often it will be broken for much longer. I rely on Saildrone when I plan long swims- routes and times. It’s almost a safety hazard when it breaks. Also wish it listed times for high and low tides, max flood, max ebb, slack, and wave height, period, and direction based on SF Bar NOAA bouy.

Interesting and pretty accurate

Saildrone Forecast is an interesting endeavor using autonomous marine vehicles to collect weather data. This allows them data that others don’t have, making weather forecasts pretty accurate, especially on the coast.

The UI is nice and has a richness that makes it nice and easy to use.

So why not 5 stars? Mainly two items. The first is that every time I open the app it shows winds, and I cannot seem to change that. I would like either a default setting, or that it remembered what layer o had active last. The second is that when you click the “Help & FAQ” link in the app, it takes you to a Zendesk page that says the following “Oops, this help center no longer exists
The company you're looking for is no longer using our help center. We suggest reaching out to them directly via their official website.”

To me that is very lacking in care of customers. Especially for a paying customer.
