Description

Few things are better for the mind than constraints and writing; Haiku offers you both. It's a fabulous form for our busy world, and offers the opportunity to stop, observe, and create something new.

Maiku is a Haiku composer that enables you to write, collect, and share your poems.

What is Haiku?
--------------
Haiku is a simple, terse form of poetry that originated in Japan. It has a rich and deep history there. It came to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century and has been used by established poets and school children alike. It follows the basic format of three lines: five syllables in the first and third and seven in the second.

Compose
---------
The Maiku editor counts your syllables as you write each line.

Share
------
Share your poetry either as text or as an image, in a Tweet, on Instagram, as a text, or however else you see fit. Share your writing with your friends and the world.

Collect
-------
Revisit and revise your poems over time.

My goal with Maiku is to provide a frictionless, novel way to engage with the world around you. Have fun and happy writing!

Soothing but not mindless

In our all too chaotic world, it’s nice to pick up my phone and spend a few minutes doing something thoughtful but not-too-difficult. I have friends who use this app to capture something from each day. Some like to share/post while others just look back on it as a kind of personal journal.

I’m using it to try and just describe one particular moment—at my desk at work, something I saw on a walk, how I feel about the day’s news. It’s satisfying to see the poems accumulate.

Good

The free version is clean & effective while the extra options come at a reasonable price, which seems rare these days. Kudos to the developer!

That said, I’d like to have an extra field at the bottom of exported images to add short context notes (date, location, etc). The text should be small and a little transparent so it doesn’t stand out.

It would also be nice to read different published haikus for inspiration instead of the one instructional haiku. Another haiku writing app does this, but Maiku has more features.

Lastly, why not make the app open to the writing page rather than the journal page? If I open the app, it’s more likely to be because I want to write rather than to read what I’ve already written.

Again, thank you for making this app. I hope my suggestions help.

They help so much. Thank you for taking the time to write and for your excellent suggestions. I think starting on the composing view is a fabulous suggestion. Also a time stamp makes a ton of sense.

Thank you for using Maiku. 🙏

I’m not a poet yet....

Maiku has opened an entirely new way to express myself. Blank pages don’t work for me. I’ve found the haiku constraints and brevity along with the ease of creating with Maiku has enabled me to write about my experiences and observations as I have never before. And since I’m am 70 that means I’ve had many years of opportunities to write in other ways!
