Description

OctoNote is a powerful and streamlined markdown based note-taking app that harnesses the power of GitHub Gists to store, secure, and share your notes easily.

OctoNote was built for users who love writing notes in Markdown and who have a need to access notes from anywhere, easily share notes with others, and keep notes secure.

Using GitHub*, OctoNote harnesses the powerful simplicity of Gists to save your notes to your GitHub profile. This means after you create or edit notes in OctoNote they are viewable anywhere through GitHub, and can be edited through the GitHub browser client as well.

For developers, markdown enables robust syntax highlighting in code blocks, which is fully supported in the OctoNote rendered markdown view.

For everyone, markdown enables beautiful page rendering, making markdown notes like single-page websites unto themselves. Easily share OctoNote notes in the app or by sharing the Gist URL to your note and enjoy the robust GitHub markdown rendering in the browser.

With OctoNote Premium, you can create, edit, and manage secret notes - notes that don't show up as public on GitHub or in search engine results. Also with Premium - you can also customize your note-editor experience with custom themes!

OctoNote uses auto-renewing subscriptions. OctoNote Premium subscription offer features tagged above as premium, like the ability to create and edit secret notes.

Payment will be charged to your iTunes account at confirmation of your purchase. Subscription automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.

Subscriptions may be managed by the user and auto-renewal may be turned off by going to the user's Account Settings after purchase.

Read the Privacy Policy and Terms and Use for more information.

Any unused portion of a free trial period, if offered, will be forfeited when the user purchases a subscription to that publication, where applicable.

View’s font size is unacceptable huge

The iPad interface seems to have been optimized for making the screenshots look good in the App Store thumbnails. I’d recommend you skip this app and look elsewhere.

The thumbnail showing rendered Markdown looks nice above, but when I actually tried to use this app, I discovered it meant that a one-line Gist with a long (but not *huge*—about 200 characters) Linux command line couldn’t display the single line on the screen all at once—on a 15″ iPad! The default font size looks like it’s about 64 pt. (I say “default” meaning “the size for plain text”—you can’t modify it in the app’s settings, as far as I can see.)

When you go into “Edit” mode, the text is appropriately-sized—but it’s all unformatted. If I just wanted an app that let me edit GitHub Gists, there are plenty of those.

I can’t imagine picking a set font size like 64-point for any reason except that it makes the App Store thumbnail look nice—otherwise, the rendered example could look like a wall of text. This wouldn’t be awful if you could modify that size, but pinch-squeezing doesn’t do it and there’s no font size item in settings.

Perhaps changing the font size is a paywall feature—if so, I wouldn’t know, as I have just deleted this app.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for trying OctoNote! You are right that OctoNote is not fully optimized for iPad, but I will definitely prioritize this defect for future releases. Your feedback is much appreciated!

Great app!

As a developer, this app really helps me keep everything I need organized! Super simple and unique design. Would recommend!

Post & edit abilities behind a pay-wall

The simple handy app that developers and note-takers want. BUT, the paid subscription service to use the core features that are normally free everywhere else is a gross idea. Especially when there’s little overhead if all it’s doing is pulling data Github. You can only peek at your Gists, not post or edit.

Developer Response ,

Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the app! Posting and editing gists is actually free forever for public gists. Thanks for trying it out though, I appreciate the feedback.

While it’s true I don’t pay for the back end services I provide, I do put a lot of time and effort into building and updating OctoNote. I’m a single developer who relies on subs to keep my apps up to date and build new features. If you have additional feedback or suggestions I’d love to hear about them - shoot me an email at aj@base11studios.com - thanks!
