Envelope Budgeting and So Much More

My wife and I found ourselves displaced after the Simple closure and that brought on a lot of anxiety. Our budgeting system there was effectively a virtual "envelope" budget using Simple's goals. Our approach was really not very different from what people using YNAB or Mvelopes or other software might do. However, the beauty of Simple was that we did it in the app in real time instead of nightly or next day. Make a transaction, categorize it to the right "envelope", and always know what you have available. This was even more important given the joint account setup with my wife and I spending out of the same account over the course of the day. No saving receipts, no nightly downloads, etc.

Enter Zeta. We hopped on early and have been loving the ride. While they don't have real time transactions yet (coming soon!), they have everything else we wanted and needed from Simple and then some. Not only has it been an improved experience for us, but the Zeta team is honestly different than any other company or team I've ever dealt with. They take in feedback constantly, readily adapt to their customer feedback, and genuinely enjoy interacting with us. A human touch that is simply uncommon in the world of consumer products today. Give them a try. I genuinely believe you'll be glad you did!

Finally - banking make Simple 🤩

After Simple Banks tragic closure, I’ve been on the hunt for a digital-first bank that offers envelope-style budgeting. I spotted Zeta and year or so back and have had my eye on them ever since. Recently my partner and I were looking to take early steps on integrate our some of our finances, and I thought “wait! I have the solution!” - even better, upon joining I learned that Zeta is testing Personal accounts - a win win! Now, my partner and I have our shared account and I have my personal, and the world is at peace. I have been saving money like a fiend and we’ve started to open the dialogue around finances - something notoriously challenging for couples. Even better, Zeta is passionate about helping couples navigate this - their articles and resources, plus friendly staff, have made this transition, well, at least the beginning parts, feel barrier-free. So excited to see what’s to come! To note, Zeta is definitely a small but mighty team fighting the good fight. Their app is improving weekly, but still has some hiccups to get through. Anytime I’ve had an issue, messaging support has gotten back quick, but be sure you have some patience as you transition everything into them. Otherwise, I would not be happier! 🙃

Good path forward

Like many others, I’m a Simple refugee in search of a bank that can recreate what I lost. Zeta comes very close with having bill payments and goals. Their tagging feature is excellent. But the most exciting thing is their open roadmap and communication with end users. They have a concierge that you can message with any questions, and they communicate frequently with end users through email and Reddit. I think Zeta can become better than Simple over the next year, and I would recommend giving it a try.

The major hurdle that I see is that Zeta requires joint accounts to sign up. If I hadn’t recently gotten married, I would have skipped over trying Zeta. They have personal accounts, but you need to have a joint account first. This may may change in the future, but for now this is best for when you had a prior partner with simple or you want to show a new partner the joys of envelope banking.
