Fusional vergence
A vergence is the simultaneous movement of both eyes in opposite directions to obtain or maintain single binocular vision.[1The cortical process of blending two slightly dissimilar (disparate) images from each eye into a single binocular stereoscopic image is sensory fusion. Eye fusion (fusional vergence) is the process of moving the eyes in opposite directions so the eyes stay aligned on the visual target, which is required for binocular fusion and stereopsis. The strength of fusional vergence is measured in prism diopters (PD) or degrees (°).The normal values for fusional convergence and fusional divergence are about 15-18°in convergence and about -3°in divergence . Ocular muscle imbalances such as large heterophoria (latent strabismus), intermittent strabismus and convergence insufficiency (CI) are often associated with low fusional vergences.

Fusional vergence dysfunction
Most symptoms are associated with reading or other close work. Common complaints include eyestrain and headaches after short periods of reading, blurred vision, sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, and loss of comprehension over time. Some patients with fusional vergence dysfunc tion are asymptomatic. Absence of symptoms may be due to suppression, avoidance of near visual tasks, a high pain threshold, or occlusion of one eye when reading. We should always inquire about avoidance of reading or other near tasks if a patient with fusional vergence dysfunction reports an absence of symptoms. Avoidance is as important as reason for recommending therapy as any of the other symptoms associated with fusional vergence dysfunction.

These symptoms may improve remarkably following training increasing one’s fusional vergence to a certain extent.
