Description

SkySafari 7 Plus goes beyond most basic stargazing apps by providing you with a full-featured space simulator with telescope control. If you are looking to dive deeper into astronomy, start your journey with the #1 recommend app for amateur astronomers since 2009.

Note that there is no discount upgrade path from SkySafari 7 Plus to SkySafari 7 Pro. Choose carefully!

Here's what’s new in version 7:

+ Complete support for iOS 15 and iPhone 13. Version 7 brings a new and immersive stargazing experience.

+ Events Finder - go to the new Events section to unlock a powerful search engine that finds astronomical events visible tonight and far into the future. The finder dynamically generates a listing of moon phases, eclipses, planetary moon events, meteor showers and planetary phenomenon such as conjunctions, elongations and oppositions.

+ Notifications - the notifications section has been completely revamped to allow you to customize and manage which events trigger an alert notification on your device.

+ Telescope Support - telescope control is at the heart of SkySafari. Version 7 takes a giant leap forward by supporting ASCOM Alpaca and INDI. These next generation control protocols allow you to effortlessly connect to hundreds of compatible astronomical devices.

+ OneSky - allows you to see what other users are observing, in real time. This feature highlights objects in the sky chart and indicates with a number how many users are observing a particular object.

+ SkyCast - allows you to guide a friend or group around the night sky through their own copy of SkySafari. After initiating SkyCast, you can generate a link and conveniently share it with other SkySafari users via text message, apps or social media accounts.

+ Sky Tonight - jump to the new Tonight section to see what’s visible in your sky tonight. Expanded information has been designed to help plan your night and includes Moon & Sun info, calendar curations, events and the best positioned deep sky and solar system objects.

+ Improved Observation Tools - SkySafari is the perfect tool to help you plan, record and organize your observations. New workflows make it easier to add, search, filter and sort data.

+ Home Screen and Lock Screen Widgets keep your favorite astro information at your fingertips.

The Small Touches:

+ You can now edit the Jupiter GRS Longitude Value in the Settings.
+ Better Moon Age calculation.
+ New grid & reference options allow you to display Solstice and Equinox markers, Orbit Node markers for all solar system objects, and tick marks and labels for the Ecliptic, Meridian, and Equator reference lines.
+ Previous In-app Purchases are Now Free - this includes the H-R diagram and 3D Galaxy view. Enjoy.
+ Many more.

If you haven't used SkySafari 7 Plus before, here's what you can do with it:

+ Hold your device up, and SkySafari 7 Plus will find stars, constellations, planets, and more!

+ Simulate the night sky up to 10,000 years in the past or future! Animate meteor showers, conjunctions, eclipses, and other celestial events.

+ Learn the history, mythology, and science of astronomy! Browse over 1500 object descriptions and astronomical images. Stay up-to-date with the Calendar for all major sky events every day!

+ Control your telescope, log and plan your observations.

+ Night Vision – Preserve your eyesight after dark.

Wanted an Ephemeris in a Planetarium Display

The app met my desires to at least replace the defunct SkyWeek Plus from Sky & Telescope. I wanted an app that showed the sky for a given date and time. Further, I wanted to see the stars below the horizon as well. Further, I was delighted to add the display of the equator, the ecliptic, and the galactic equator. I was further delighted to see the plot of the planet Neptune, which SkyWeek lacked. I was happy that the display was adjustable to my latitude and longitude instead of SkyWeek’s hard-coded +40 degrees latitude, 90 degrees west. What I really was looking for was very specific: a planetarium ephemeris. I have only had the app installed for about an hour, so I have a lot more to learn!

Improvement over 6 but a few minor issues

The new interface takes some getting used to, but once I figured out where everything was I definitely think it's an improvement. It makes logging and planning my observing sessions much easier. I love the events section. Enormously useful for planning. I do have a couple of minor complaints. The apparent lack of ability to automatically import observation records from SS6 is leading to a lot of work to restore progress on observing lists by carefully relogging them out of my notebooks. Also I like the new notification options, but you REALLY need a way to restrict notifications to things that are above the horizon from your current location. I don't want to get notifications of shadow transits on Jupiter when Jupiter is below my current horizon. It would be really nice to be able to restrict notifications to phenomena one can actually OBSERVE. Note for anyone struggling with the decision between plus and pro; On SS4 And SS5, I went with the pro version but starting with 6 I realized plus is a better fit for me. I use SkySafari in the field as a star atlas, and Plus is just a more practical field Atlas than the pro version. It goes just a hair deeper than Uranometria 2000, which is all I'll likely ever need. SSPro is a great desk reference, but unless you own a HUGE dobsonian, it's actually a little impractical in the field.

Developer Response ,

Hi, thank you so much for the review! Login to SkySafari 7 (Settings - LiveSky) with your existing SkySafari 6 LiveSky.com account to automatically import and sync your data - including observation records. Notifications should take your current location into account, I will check with the development team to ensure that is the case. SkySafari plus

Would not recommend this app. After years of having the SkySafari Pro, and it’s constant prompts for me to upgrade, I finally decided to upgrade to the sky safari plus. I spent two hours trying to enter my preferences in my information into the settings, I prompted into settings to show planets and it did. Now they’re gone even though the setting still indicates that they’re showing. It took the better part of an hour to try to figure out how to get the time to be correct to my current time. I finally found the setting that it thought I was for some reason in England. Once I got that changed, it finally set it up to my local time. But the sky did not adjust. I was sitting there, looking at Orion about 30° above the horizon, but the app was showing me it was about 10° below the horizon. All of the planets have disappeared from the view. And I turned off the marketing settings and yet every time I open the app it’s trying to get me to upgrade to the premium version. Do not recommend this app and if things don’t get better, I’m possibly going to delete it.
