Ship's Bell is primarily an acoustic clock that sounds half-hourly or hourly time signals. Without taking the phone out of your pocket you can easily keep track of time.
The principle of this bell was founded in traditional seafaring. Seafarers used the bell to keep track of their four-hourly duty watches. The first half hour is signaled by a single bell strike. Another bell strike is added every half hour, ending with eight bell strikes. To hear the bell strikes better, they are grouped into double chimes. Eight bell strikes signaled a watch change – at midnight, 4 am, 8 am, 12 pm, 4 pm and 8 pm. With just eight different signals, being repeated in six cycles during the day, you will know what time it is every half and full hour.

A new addition in version 3.0 is the Tide Clock.
An additional clock hand and a tide ring can now be activated on the two dials of the glass clock (12-hour or 24-hour dial). This makes it possible to estimate the time until the next high or low tide in the style of a mechanical tide clock. The tide clock hand makes one revolution within 12 hours and 25 minutes independently of the hour clock hand and thus shows the average time between two high or low tides. The indices on the tide ring show the hours before and after a coming or past high or low tide.

• The app has been reprogrammed for iOS 15. The glass strikes are now realised via the iOS messages.
• A brand new addition is the Tide Clock. With this additional display in the clock face of the Ship's Bell, you can see at any time which phase of the tide you are currently in. All you have to do is set the date and time of the next high tide.

Please be sure to note that due to technical changes in the iOS, after opening the new version of the Ship's Bell app for the first time, the settings for the iOS Notification must be set as shown in the integrated instructions (Help - Settings).
In order to receive only a sound signal but not also the text notification specified by iOS, the text alerts (Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners) must be deactivated in the Notifications settings for the app.

Not updated do not buy.
Do not buy until they update app. I bought mine years ago and it worked great, but with the latest updates for iOS, the app stopped working/chiming. Hopefully they will update one day. There are other options out there though.
Ship
As a former US Navy officer, I enjoy the sounds of ship's bells, and have owned a brass replica of the type of clock I had onboard my last ship for years. This app is good, however I would suggest the following improvements. First of all, as pretty much everybody has stated, give us the ability to control the volume independent of the iPhone's ringer volume. In addition, give us the capability to program "quiet hours" so the app would automatically turn off the bells.
My other suggestions are more annoying than anything else. The two sounds available for the ship's bells are too few. The "Classic Sound" is nothing like any ship's bell I have ever heard. It sounds much larger than even the 2 foot tall ship's bell I heard for years. I would also like to add the sound of the small ship's bell which all sailors are accustomed too - this is more of a chime than a bell or "clang". I have no use for the "Modern" bell, and don't know why it's even included.
Also, it would be better if the 24 hour clock were able to orient itself to the iPhone's horizontal position. I often have my iPhone on my desk in the landscape mode, but when displaying this clock, it can only be used vertically.
The app instructions also state that it's possible to have the clock display GMT but I can see no way to accomplish this. I would have thought this would be within the "Settings" but I could not locate it.
I look forward to subsequent updates and improvements.
Great app
This app, after using the iOS 5 work around, seems to work ok; sometimes it still fails to sound. I'm hoping the next update will fix this. I've installed all of the other ship's bell apps and this is by far my favorite. I love that it vibrates when the phone is in silent mode. It would be the perfect ship's bell app with the edition of 2 things. 1) an option to silence based on a schedule within the app, as noted by other reviewers. 2) an option to control the volume of the bell/chime independently of the phone ringer volume. This way the app would be heard only by the phone's user and therefore a bit less obtrusive. To the developers, keep up the good work. The suggestions above would make this a 5-star app without a doubt.
