Description

The best and most complete birding app for South America!

No continent supports a bigger and more varied bird population, more than 3,000 species belonging to more than 100 families are presented in this app.

This is the only app that describes all the species of birds regularly found in South America!

All bird names are included in English, Latin, and the major languages spoken in South America (Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as in many other languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc.

In addition to the bird descriptions and images the app presents an ornithological dictionary with thousands of special terms and their explanations (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as high-quality drawings and explanations of bird anatomy and topology in English, French, and Spanish.

The current app contains descriptions of more than 3,100 bird species. All images are contained within the app for complete offline use of the app in the field where there might be no internet connection..

This version of the app contains more than 5,000 bird images, only very few species (8) are currently without image!

The app runs completely offline, there is no need for an internet connection during usage of the app (except for the backup/restore operations for Field Notes to/from the server).

I don’t recommend

It has a couple of pictures of birds and their names in various languages. No vocalizations. For some birds, a brief description and habitat. Some pics are wrong.

Slightly better than nothing

Hours to download mediocre photos (user submitted or pulled from the web from the looks of it), only to find out that most of the birds still don't have pictures.

The descriptions are dry and the taxonomy is confusing, i.e. it is hard to find what you are looking for.

Points for lots of languages, but nothing else.

Greatly improved version

Three years ago I reviewed an early version of this app and found it practically useless (because it had no search functions and was simply a catalog of birds).

But this version is greatly improved and rectifies some of the problems I mentioned earlier. You can now narrow your search by country or by species and you can search the names and descriptions for various terms. Furthermore the app claims to list all 3000+ species in South America and, a real bonus, allows you to download the whole database for off-line use.

I would suggest two more improvements for the next version: 1) including a mention in each description of “similar species” to make comparisons easier; and 2) adding a function that allows narrowing search results by color, size, shape, etc.

But overall this app is a vast improvement over the earlier one and is now a useful tool for identifying birds in the field.

Felicitaciones!

Developer Response ,

Useless comment. And so old and never updated. But the app has been updated and is complete. It is a pity that users don't update their comments. Even for such a terrific app.
