Description

The 'Battles of the Ancient World' game system is a tactical simulation of some of the greatest and most important battles from ancient history from 1457 B.C. to 451 A.D.. Each of the 18 scenarios available features one of these great battles and players may play as either side. Each unit in the game represents an actual unit that participated in the battle, each with an actual strength between 250 and 1,200 men. The map represents the actual terrain over which each battle was fought. The game in the series has been designed to ensure maximum playability and historical accuracy, in that order. There are over 100 different units across all the missions, ranging from elite Roman Legionaries, to Persian Scythed Chariots. Each unit has its own unique ability that you need to take advantage of in order to win each battle.

Always one step from greatness.

I tried the Cannae battle and had some good fun with it. Usual Hexwar Ancients issues - no real unit facing rules and the maps "just fit" the units on the field.

Hexwar guys - I realize that you're stuck on unit facing rules etc until you go to the C&C Ancients engine - but until then - can you please make your maps with room to maneuver on the flanks?

Fans would be a lot happier to employ maneuver rather than throwing armies directly at each other. Thanks

Not Bad but Some Missed Opportunities

While I did have fun with the game itself, I felt there were many missed opportunities regarding scenarios and and certain factions. I found the Egyptian battles quite fun and unique compared to the usual Macedonian and Roman scenarios. I’d honestly be interested in seeing an Ancient Battles game set exclusively in Biblical times (Like, Babylonia and Ancient Egypt, just as examples).

Overall though not bad.

Somewhat Disappointed

Don't know what I was thinking. A traditional computerized board game. Charging anything more than $3-4 is over priced in my opinion. Nothing novel or progressive here though seems competently done.
